A fantastic Career Day
- full of opportunities in Grieghallen
After last year’s success, excited organizers waited in Grieghallen on Wednesday October 1st. When the door opened at 10 o’clock, all 88 companies were ready with their stands and impatient students were already waiting outside. From the beginning until the end the day was a great success, and the event was definitely full of possibilities.
Ben Holan did a great model-interview at the stage and Rønnaug Tveit from Karrieresenteret meant that the interviewers from Sparebanken Vest seemed much more nervous that Ben Holan on the stage. Holan had applied for the position of a bank adviser and presented, among others, his experience as a leader of NSU when he was asked economical questions. It was a great interview which gave nearly 300 spectators a picture of how job interviews look like. Maybe after having had a chance to see such an interview one will not be as stressed in the future?
Pia’s tips
The highlight of the day was surely Pia Haraldsen. Almost 500 students filled up Peer Gynt’s Hall and the first row was covered with representatives from the media. With a great sense of humor and sparkles in her eyes, Norway’s media’s favorite presenter shared her career tips and underlined the importance of networking. Party photos from Myspace or unserious e-mail addresses were one of the necessities to avoid in the job application process. If there is a need to liven up your CV with a photo, it should maybe not be a photo from one of the above mentioned situations. She spoke about herself applying for a job as a political editor in Rikets Røst and a video from the famous series showed how well she succeeded in her role as a ‘blonde’ and an uneducated person. There is no doubt that this unconventional career-woman suited perfectly into the frame of the topic “A day of possibilities”. She greatly appreciated getting the chance to take part in the event and to share her own experiences on how to climb up the career-ladder. – Get out there, be ready to mingle, was Pia’s final advice.
The new record
There was a lot of mingling in the Grieghallen that day. Between 5000 and 6000 visiting students during the event is a new record compared to last year’s results. The representatives of different companies had a very busy day speaking to all the interested students. Several came prepared with their CVs. The career-market stand was very popular among the students, and many had carefully selected which celebrity to show their CV to. The feedback from students was solely positive and many emphasized the friendly people present on the stands and a wide range of companies as the best part of the event. Representatives from most of the industries were present, and hopefully everybody found something for their taste. Maybe some got a chance to find out some new future job opportunities with their education, or by watching different corporate presentation realized that one or the other companies could be their future employers?
The new highlight this year was a chance companies received to invite interesting students to an evening event. During the evening guests got to chat together over a good meal in a more casual setting. Arme Riddere and Jonas Rønning entertained the crowd from the stage. The day finished in a great fashion, and we are already looking forward to next year’s Career Day!
